The one rule that matters: come while you are ill
A doctor can only certify what they can actually observe. If you wait until you feel better, the most we can honestly write is what you have told us — and universities and insurers know the difference. So book the appointment on the day you are ill, or as close to it as possible.
What the certificate can be used for
- Missed exams and coursework — most universities require a medical certificate (lægeerklæring) for a missed exam; check your university’s deadline, often within a few days.
- Travel insurance claims — cancelled trips, missed flights and cut-short holidays usually require documentation of illness from a local doctor.
- Employers abroad — a signed certificate in English from a Danish specialist in general medicine.
- Fit-to-fly — a separate certificate confirming you are well enough to travel; see medical certificates.

Can I get a sick note without seeing a doctor?
No — Danish doctors only issue certificates after an actual consultation. That is what makes the certificate worth something.
Can you backdate a sick note?
No. The certificate states what the doctor observed at the consultation, and the date is the date you were seen. Come while you are ill.
Is the certificate in English?
Yes — issued in English by default, signed and stamped by the doctor.
What does it cost?
DKK 1,000 including the consultation. If your insurer or university has its own form, bring it and we fill it in as part of the visit.
